Who is Jake?

Hello! This has nothing to do with vintage, or fashion, or etsy, but I just had to share this video of my little, grumpy, old dog.

A bit of history: We're from Arizona, but haven't lived there for years. Every winter, it's more and more clear that Jake knows where he's from and is pretty angry that our current location (Albany, NY) is so chilly. I'd say we keep the house cool/comfortable, because we try to be aware of our energy consumption, but Jake is apparently anti-green and demands his own space heater. This is what happens when I do not turn the space heater on . . . in less than a minute, you'll see all of Jakey's tactics for convincing the space heater to turn on: gently nudging it, licking it, biting it, and eventually, the takedown.

To answer the original question: Jake is our dachshund, rescued from an abusive home 9 years ago. He'll turn 10 this December, and enjoys warmth, sweaters, walks, sleeping, digging, playing fetch, and cuddling. Though his name is in our shop name, he is not committed to vintage shopping!

Estate Jewelry: 925 CW Italy

This weekend, I came into an amazing set of vintage rings (and 1 necklace) from a local estate sale. The lady told me that they were her grandmother's, and that she started collecting jewelry in the 1920's. I bought it all! Of the 6 pieces, all are sterling silver, and three are signed CW 925 (and one of those also has ITALY stamped on it). My initial online research points me in the direction of Charles Winston, who used the CW mark in the 70s - 80s, but he's an American jewelry designer (so why is one stamped Italy?) and these piece look much older than that (to me). Opinions? I'd love to hear any suggestions you have!

Beauty naps are passe . . . Beauty rides the Vogue!

(with a fabulous comic, which ends with the father saying, "Say, Mother, since you started riding a bike a few weeks ago, I can hardly tell you from daughter.")

The Majorette by Venus came with a "free figure analysis" if you simply sent in your bust, waist and hip measurements, and included your length from waist to knee and weight. Yikes!

Munsingwear's Half-Pint Pants were found only at "better stores" and "nipped off fullness" with their unique blend of silk and rayon.

1940: College Girls in Men's Clothing

Loved this article so much, I scanned it in for you to enjoy.

The above photo has this caption, "Jumper dresses are outstanding non-masculine style in fall college wardrobes. The one at left, however, retains a masculine affinity in fabric i.e., men's-wear gray flannel. Although all plaids are popular, newest are the plaids with white grounds."

My favorite photo of the bunch reads, "Visor cap resembles those worn by baseball players, is made of corduroy in numerous colors. Wood bracelet has a dangling penknife for carving dates, initials, etc."

These pictures are of a "mannish jacket . . . purposely loose-fitting," as well as men's moccasins

and a man's raincoat. The red rubber boots are an adaption of boy's boots.

Grenelle Estevez . . . need I say more?

Grenelle Estévez (born Luis Estévez, 1930, in Cuba) attended the Traphagen School of Fashion. In 1955 he began designing under his own name, a label that lasted until 1968. In 1972, he designed for actress Eva Gabor (The Eva Gabor Look by Estévez). By 1977, Estévez was designing for many Hollywood stars, and eventually retired in 1997.

Finding Vintage: An XL Clothing Lot!

Yuppers, it's true! I came into a lot (LOT) of

1950's - 1970's XL & Plus size clothing. Mostly casual

day dresses, wrap skirts, and sweaters -- but there are

also a few 1950's cocktail party dresses, some 1960's evening wear,

and several 1970's disco dresses. She was a bit smaller in the 50's & 60's,

so those are more in the L - XL size range (modern day 12 - 14).

The 70's dresses range from a contemporary size 14 - 24. Very cute

taste, all flattering cuts, many nautical styles, V necklines and full skirts!

Fall is coming, and I'll admit that I'm quite excited! I love the colors of autumn, a little chill in the air, and layering my cute vintage dresses with shrugs, cardigans and capes! Here are my favorites, all vintage, all found on Etsy, and nothing over $80!

Ack! I love pink, and I love this 80's sweater! From Solanah, $20.

Perhaps the loveliest cut I've seen on a coat! If I found this swing coat in my local thrift shop, I'd keep it! But, for only $43 I'm thinking about snatching it up anyways. From forrestinavintage.

Rumor has it that blazers are back! Rock them in stripes, like this cropped mod blazer, from brownbagvintage, $30.

Vintage Mugs & Glassware!

I used to have a matching set of mugs in my kitchen cabinets . . . but not anymore! I find myself being drawn to mismatched kitschy cups, mugs with text on them, melmac, and milk glass. My cupboard is so diverse, and it's fun to choose which mug to pour my morning coffee into! Here are a few favorites from my shop. I started with this Grandpa mug, because tomorrow is Father's Day!

This vintage milk jug is covered in orange text! It even features a dairy cow. I love using old milk containers as vases, or to make sun tea outside! They are just fun to have around your home.

I just listed this oversized vintage glass! Anything with animals draws my attention, and a bright red pig is not to be missed! It reads, "Pig Out!" which seems strange on a glass. Shouldn't it say, "Drink up!" or "Too Thirsty!" ?? Pig out just seems odd . . .

I love this mug! It's the perfect gag gift. Anyone who will sip their morning brew out of a mug that read "Over the Hill and Off the Pill" has a great sense of humor!

And, my current favorite mug: Country Music x 13. Display both your love for Country Western and Vintage with this kitschy coffee cup!

Ok, I know! I was just gushing about how great skirts are . . . but then all my dresses got jealous and wanted their own post. Here are some of my favorites, as well as a sneak peek at some beauties that I'll be listing over the next couple of days!

New to the shop, is my current favorite: The Bubblegum Pink Ruffle Dress! Breezy cotton, tons of ruffles and pleats, and a little puff sleeves! It's amazing, and listed here.

I haven't listed this looker, yet! It's a sheer black dress with cascading flowers, tiny cap sleeves, and a flirty skirt! Coming soon . . .

This rainbow striped, flapper inspired summer dress is too cute! One size fits all, and super lightweight for summer. I'll be listing this lovely dress this afternoon, so stay tuned!

This scalloped baby blue half slip is so sweet! I'll be listing this skirt slip, and a few other separates soon!

This most beautiful white slip is by Fortrel & Fybrite, Vintage Size 36. Sweet lace bust and back, with sheer netting underlayer, adjustable straps, lace trimmed skirt, empire waist, and mini length. It's so lovely, delicate, and sexy. Circa 1950's, with attached Ladies Union stamp, listed here.

Lastly, we have a vibrant navy blue full slip, from Van Raalte. It's amazing! Empress Jade Vintage has an amazing blog dedicated to the Van Raalte intimates, I learned so much about Van Raalte's products and history!
